After saying our goodbyes to Jonas at Grandmommy and Grandfather's house on Thursday, we headed for the Knoxville airport for Scotlen's first plane ride and her first trip to Disney World. After recently engaging in so much boring air travel for work, it was refreshing to see Scotlen experience an airport for the first time. She declared everything to be "awesome" - including the hot, stuffy hallway that leads from the gate to the plane. We had a little hiccup upon reaching our seats when Scotlen discovered that she could pull the window shades down by herself. She insisted that they be left down, and our dreams of seeing her experience her first views of Earth from an airplane began to evaporate. Fortunately, the admonition that she needed to raise the shades so the pilots could see out of the plane worked, and she marveled just as we had hoped. The pretzels were also a big hit.
We arrived in Orlando and took Disney's Magical Express to the hotel, where we were pleased and relieved to see that "safari view" really did include safari animals. It is strange to see antelope, giraffes, and zebras grazing outside your hotel room. We hit the hotel buffet for dinner and received our first official welcome to Disney World. For the bargain price of $17 Scotlen ate a single chicken nugget, a few bites of mac n cheese, and a handful of grapes. That was our last trip to the buffet.
We went to bed fully excited for the next day at the Animal Kingdom. Sadly, we awoke to some unexpected excitement when Scotlen developed a fever in the middle of the night. The hotel shop was out of children's fever reducer, but the staff paid for Kyle to take a cab to the Walgreen's. The buffet prices didn't seem so horrible then. After forcing in some grape ibuprofen, we managed to sleep for a couple of hours.
