Due to the heroic efforts of Grandmommy, Grandfather, and Auntie, who cared for Jonas and Scotlen, Kyle and I were able to take a ski trip to Vail, Colorado last week. Just the two of us. We had an amazing time. Kyle, in contrast to his initial impressions of the sport, has developed a deep love of skiing. And what we lack in skill, we make up for in enthusiasm. Each year we are able to go we get a little better and a little braver.
Interestingly, the last time we skied in 2008, about 10% of the people on the mountain wore helmets. This year it was more like 90%. We were thankful to be in the 90% this year when Kyle decided to get up close and personal with a tree. The only other hairy moment was when we found ourselves, completely unintentionally, in the midst of a mogul field. I once won a contest for the slowest bicycle ride as a child. My caution knows no bounds. I would challenge anyone in a contest for the slowest mogul descent.
Here are a couple of pics of us on the slopes:

Impressive, no? Here are some pics we snapped of some unknown, really pathetic skiers.

Depending upon which one of us you ask, there either were or were not any significant injuries this year. I would say no. Kyle would say he faces bilateral big toe amputation. Apparently, the ski boots he used on the first day were a little small. So his big toes were, um, a little cramped. This seems to have resulted in a bit of irritation and lack of blood flow. It is unclear as to whether the toenails are really serious about sticking around. Kyle, with no hint of humor, asked if we could sue the ski rental agency for giving him boots that were too small. I told him I would have to look up the going rate for toenails to determine if such a suit would really be cost effective.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of keeping the toenails. The beard on the other hand. . .
